Late model Leica M3, single stroke, serial number 1158xxx, manufactured in 1966. Leitz product code IGEMO.
The Leica M3 is widely regarded as the greatest rangefinder camera ever made—a true masterpiece that propelled Leica to the top of the camera world in the postwar era and remains a legendary icon in photographic history.
This particular unit falls within the serial number range 1157601–1158995, placing it just before the final batch of 19 units (1164846–1164865) produced in 1966, which are now considered near-mythical among collectors.
It retains its original configuration from the time of release and is in exceptionally beautiful condition. All parts are period-correct. A truly outstanding example, now fully refreshed through a recent overhaul, with flawless operation throughout.
There is a tiny mark near the baseplate latch—smaller than a pinhead and only visible under a loupe. Aside from that, there are no signs of use, and the camera is in outstandingly clean condition.
Even the back door area, which is often prone to wear from case use, shows no scuffs or scratches—truly near mint. The vulcanite covering is entirely original and pristine, with a strong texture. The wrinkle-painted area next to the back door retains its grainy finish, clearly indicating minimal use. The condition of all parts is consistent and cohesive.
Overhauled in April 2025. All operations are smooth and precise. The viewfinder is clean and clear, free from haze or balsam separation, and the rangefinder patch has excellent contrast.
Comes with original body cap, manual, and box. The sync cap is also a clean, genuine Leica part.
Original Leica M3 bodies in this kind of condition are extremely rare—this is a true gem.
