Summicron 50mm f2, first generation. This example is the early fixed-barrel version. Serial number in the 1.47 million range, manufactured in 1957. Leitz product code SOSIC-MS, later 11818. Distance scale in feet. Minimum focusing distance is 1 meter.
A modified Gauss-type design with 6 elements in 7 groups. Designed with emphasis on contrast, offering improved resolution and earning its reputation as one of Leica’s legendary lenses.
The Summicron remains one of Leica’s representative lenses and continues in production to this day, but the first-generation model, with its beautifully finished chrome plating and elegant form, retains enduring popularity. A true Leica standard lens that is a pleasure both to admire and to shoot with. It pairs wonderfully with any M body.
Filter size is E39. Compatible hoods are ITDOO and IROOA.
There is a very slight paint loss on the silver-painted helicoid near the infinity lock pin, but for an early 1st version with fixed barrel, it remains in very beautiful cosmetic condition.
Fully overhauled in February 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture and helicoid now operate with smooth and refined feel. Rangefinder coupling is accurate and focus is excellent.
The middle element shows a faint whitish coating deterioration that can only be seen under strong LED light, but it should have virtually no effect on actual photography. There are no noticeable cleaning marks, and the glass is clear overall. The coating remains intact across the surfaces.
Period-correct genuine front and rear caps are included. The front cap shows some minor signs of wear.
