The Nikkor 85mm was first introduced in 1948, with the early models sporting a chrome-plated silver barrel. It has a 3-group, 5-element Sonnar design, with a filter diameter of 48mm and distance scale marked in feet.
At maximum aperture, the lens produces images with a slight softness, beautifully balancing rich tonal gradation and high contrast. Stopping down to around f4 reduces vignetting, resulting in even illumination and sharp, high-contrast images.
This is the very lens praised by *Life* magazine correspondent David Douglas Duncan, who used it during the Korean War, helping to establish the global reputation of Japanese-made lenses.
The later version with the black lens barrel is somewhat rare and has a design that suits both silver and black camera bodies. It can also be enjoyed on modern mirrorless digital cameras using an adapter.

There are only a few very light scuff marks on the chrome-plated areas, but the black paint is well-preserved, resulting in an overall attractive appearance. The included hood shows almost no signs of use and is also in excellent condition.
The lens underwent a full overhaul in September 2024, and thanks to careful servicing, the aperture and helicoid operate very smoothly. Focus has been checked with a Nikon S body for accuracy.
