The early version of the W-Nikkor-C 25mm f4, a wide-angle lens by Nippon Kogaku. Designed for the Nikon S series. This lens was introduced in 1953, boasting the widest angle of view for 35mm cameras at the time, following the Contax Topogon 25mm f4.
The lens design follows the Topogon type, with a 4-group, 4-element configuration that combines meniscus lenses symmetrically. It offers a clear image with a pleasant softness at maximum aperture, without noticeable distortion. Notably, this Nikkor 25mm f4 is unique among Nikon S-mount lenses in that it relies solely on the body’s helicoid for focusing.
The early version features a more substantial build compared to the later version, with the lens itself weighing approximately 134g. When mounted on a Nikon S model, especially with a black-painted body and equipped with a finder and hood, it not only looks superb but is also a pleasure to behold.
It is worth noting that the total production of Nikon S-mount lenses, including both early and late versions, is estimated at around 300 units. This makes it quite a rare item, with the caps and hoods being particularly scarce.
The lens shows minimal signs of use and is in very clean condition. Both the plating and paint retain much of their original new appearance.
Fully overhauled in August 2024. The aperture and helicoid operate smoothly. The glass exhibits minor coating wear and a tiny cleaning mark on the front element, but it remains clear and free of fog. The viewfinder also provides a clear view.
Includes the original front and rear caps, as well as the dedicated viewfinder.
We are pleased to share past test shots comparing this Topogon-type lens with its Japanese and German counterparts in the same situation. We hope you find them enjoyable.
