Leica Model A Converted to DII with Early Elmar Lens.
This is a Leica Model A manufactured in 1928 that was later converted into a Leica DII. The serial number is in the 85xx range. Naturally, the conversion was carried out by Leitz, and is referred to overseas as a Factory Conversion. The finish is black paint with chrome trim, making it well-suited for pairing with a wide range of chrome lenses.
In addition to the standard DII specifications and features, this particular unit has been enhanced with strap lugs, improving ease of use. A subtle detail is the shutter speed dial, which has been replaced with a CAVOO-A type dial featuring a flash sync cam. This specialized dial was intended for use with the external VACU synchronizer and has a distinctive raised cam.
The included lens is an early Elmar made with glass supplied by Goerz. It is unnumbered, uncoated, and features the earliest short-barrel design, Type 1. The barrel is noticeably shorter than usual, giving the mistaken impression that the lens is only partially collapsed. Distance markings are in meters.
The edges of the top cover show some exposed brass and moderate paint wear from use, giving the camera a well-worn, appealing character.
Both the camera and lens were overhauled in April 2025. All functions operate smoothly, and the viewfinder is bright and clear.
The lens's aperture and focusing helicoid operate with exceptional smoothness. The front element shows a few faint cleaning marks, and the middle element has slight aging-related haze, but overall, the glass is in very good condition.
This early Elmar is a real joy to use, even on modern digital Leica M bodies.
A genuine black paint-finished Leica front lens cap is included.
This is a true collector’s piece: an early Leica Model A customized with a rangefinder, strap lugs, and semi-chrome accents—a configuration sure to please enthusiasts.
