This is a first-generation, early version of the fixed barrel Summicron 50mm f2, which followed shortly after the collapsible Summicron. With a serial number in the 1,400,000 range, this lens is an early production model from 1956, the debut year of the fixed barrel Summicron, and one of only 152 produced. It is one of the very earliest fixed barrel models. The distance markings are in feet. The product code is SOSIC, later changed to 11818.
This lens features a modified Gauss type design with 6 elements in 7 groups. Designed with a focus on contrast, it also boasts improved resolution, making it a highly acclaimed lens. The Summicron remains a flagship lens for Leica, with its first generation still highly popular for its high-quality chrome finish and beautiful form. It's a classic old lens that is both a pleasure to look at and to use for photography. It complements any M-series body perfectly.
The filter size is E39. Compatible hoods are ITDOO and IROOA.
The helicoid ring of this early version fixed barrel often has silver paint that tends to wear off, but this particular unit shows only minor scuffing and retains a beautiful appearance.
It underwent a full overhaul in 2023. As with the previous sale, the aperture and helicoid operate with the right amount of smoothness and torque, and the rangefinder coupling is perfect.
The front and rear elements have some small scratches and scuffs, and the front element shows the characteristic coating damage. There is also minor haze around the edges of the middle element. While the glass condition is not ideal, the actual image quality is excellent, producing very sharp images, perhaps due to the unique qualities of early Leitz models. This lens would appeal to those who appreciate early versions.
The lens comes with the original front cap and a plastic case.
