Leica DIII. Serial number in the 170,000 range, manufactured in 1935. Leitz product code AFOOV. Black paint and nickel-plated finish. Overseas, this model is also known as the Model F or Leica III. The tripod socket is the early small-thread type.
The previous DII was Leica’s first model with a built-in rangefinder. With the following DIII, Leitz added a diopter adjustment mechanism, strap lugs, and slow shutter speeds. It is a Barnack Leica with a high degree of functional refinement, making it excellent for practical use as well. The maximum shutter speed is 1/500 second.
Its compact size fits neatly in the hand, and the calm combination of black paint and nickel gives it a wonderfully soothing presence. Pair it with a nickel lens, and it becomes a Leica that is as satisfying to use as it is to admire. Long cherished by many enthusiasts, this is a Leica that appeals directly to the senses.
The brass is showing through slightly in various areas, but overall the black paint remains very well preserved on this DIII. It is hard to believe that more than 90 years have passed since it was manufactured. This is a condition that allows you to enjoy using it with confidence, while fully appreciating the fine build quality of the Leica DIII.
A full overhaul, including shutter curtain replacement, was carried out in July 2026. All functions now operate smoothly, so you can enjoy shooting with peace of mind.
The finder view is also clear, and the rangefinder patch has good contrast.
