Summilux 50mm f1.4 Second Generation. Serial Number 2,340,000 Series, Manufactured in 1969. Leitz Code: 11114.
The early models of the second generation Summilux 50mm were in the same chrome barrel as the first generation. However, this particular item is a later version of the second generation, featuring a black chrome finish. The knurling design has been changed, and the lens has been made lighter. The white chrome version of the second generation weighs approximately 325g, while this one measures an actual weight of 289g.
While the lens construction remains a 7-element in 5-group design, the second generation introduced new design. This made the rendering at wide apertures sharper while retaining the characteristic Summilux softness. You can enjoy stable image quality even from wide open, making it a versatile and classic large-aperture lens from Leica.
The compatible filter size is E43, and for a hood that matches the era, the 12586 is recommended, though the XOOIM or 12521G hoods.
There are very slight scuffs on the tip of the barrel from attaching and removing the hood, but overall, the exterior is extremely clean with no signs of use. The lens underwent a full overhaul in August 2024. Thanks to careful maintenance, the aperture ring clicks with a satisfying feel, and the helicoid operates smoothly. The rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned, ensuring accurate focusing.
While there are some very minor blemishes on the coating of the inner elements, the glass is otherwise very clean, with no cleaning marks or haze. This lens should allow you to fully enjoy the original rendering characteristics of the Summilux. The test shots also produced excellent results.
