Noctilux 50mm f1.2, 1st generation. The original version of the legendary Noctilux f1.2, which recently made a surprising comeback as a reissue, generating significant buzz. The Leitz product code is 11820, and this particular unit, with a serial number in the 2,250,000 range, was manufactured in 1968. It features a 4-group, 6-element optical design.
This lens is the world’s first commercially series-produced lens with an aspherical design. Named Noctilux, meaning light of the night, it is capable of capturing faint light with remarkable contrast reproduction, delivering a unique rendering characterized by vignetting and distinctive bokeh. Among Leitz's lineup of highly individualistic lenses, the Noctilux stands out as a truly one-of-a-kind creation.
This unit is in pristine, like-new condition—so immaculate it seems almost untouchable. A perfect choice for anyone seeking a beautiful example of the first-generation Noctilux.
The black paint finish, with its subdued luster, shows no signs of wear. Even the edges of the filter ring and the helicoid ring remain pristine, free of any paint loss. Its appearance is virtually unchanged from its factory condition over 50 years ago. What a remarkable piece to have endured in such form!
Special care is required when attaching the original clip-on 14102P cap or the 12503 hood, as these can easily cause scuffs. In November 2024, this lens underwent a full overhaul. Thanks to careful servicing, this first-generation Noctilux, previously seized from lack of use, has been revitalized. The glass is free from cleaning marks, and its appearance is stunning. Under LED light inspection, slight age-related coating marks are visible on the inner elements, but these have no discernible impact on image quality. The rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned, and test shots produced excellent results.
Included are an exceptionally beautiful, near-unused 12503 hood, a UVa filter, a warranty card issued in Ohio, USA, in 1971, an import certificate for North America, a 14102P cap, and a plastic case.
This Noctilux is so immaculate it feels almost too pristine to use—an exceptionally rare condition! Perfect for a collector’s treasure trove.
