Model number 11817. Manufactured in 1970 with serial number in the 2,450,000 range. This is the second generation Summicron 50mm lens, which was revamped in 1969. It features a 5-group, 6-element configuration. Starting from this second model, it allows focusing as close as 0.7m.
This lens, often overshadowed by the first generation Summicron, offers excellent image quality. With the elimination of the infinity lock, its usability has been further enhanced. The adoption of lightweight metal for the barrel, weighing approximately 200g, is also a favorable aspect. It's an excellent lens for practical use.
For those seeking a well-maintained second-generation Summicron, this is the one to consider. Comes with lens hood 12585 and hood cap.
Apart from slight abrasions around the filter ring due to hood attachment and detachment, the lens exhibits minimal signs of use and is in excellent condition overall. The included 12585 hood is also in good condition.
There is a very faint cleaning mark on the rear element's center, but otherwise, there are no noticeable scratches or haze, resulting in clear and pristine glass.
In addition to a full overhaul in 2022, the lens has undergone another cleaning and inspection of all parts in May 2024, in preparation for this resale. The aperture ring, which can sometimes feel loose on the 6-element Summicron, operates smoothly, and the focusing helicoid is very smooth, ensuring stress-free focusing. Rangefinder coupling is excellent from close-up to infinity, ensuring sharp focus at all distances.
While this lens used to be commonly found in camera stores, good examples have become scarce in recent years. Don't miss this opportunity.
