Summarit 50mm f1.5, early version with Leica screw mount. Serial number in the 1,070,000 range, manufactured in 1953. Leitz product code is SOOIA. It has a 5-group, 7-element construction with coating. Distance scale is in feet. Filter size is E41. Compatible hood is XOONS.
Introduced as the successor to the Xenon 50mm f1.5, this was Leitz's second-generation large-aperture fast lens. While the barrel design closely resembles that of the Xenon, the use of new glass types and coating significantly improved its performance.
Following this Summarit, the even faster and highly popular Summilux was released, which remains extremely popular today. However, this Summarit is also a representative of classic lenses that offer a variety of unique rendering characteristics. At wide apertures, it produces a dreamy, soft-focus effect with pronounced bokeh. When stopped down, it delivers very sharp and richly detailed images.
It has a very clean appearance. There are some very slight scuffs that are only visible under certain lighting conditions, but there are no noticeable scratches or dents, giving it a well-cared-for look.
Fully overhauled in July 2024. Thanks to meticulous maintenance, the typically heavy aperture and helicoid rings of the Summarit now operate smoothly and fluidly. The rangefinder coupling is perfect, and the focusing is excellent.
The lens has some light cleaning marks on the front element and slight coating damage on various surfaces, but these should not affect the image quality. For a Summarit, which is prone to soft coating scratches and fogging, the glass is in good condition.
Test shots were also very satisfactory. Comes with the original front cap.
