The chrome-bodied Elmar 50mm f/3.5, with Leica's product code ELMAR. It was manufactured in 1947 with a serial number in the 630,000 range. The distance markings are in feet. It has a coated 3-group 4-element design. The filter size is A36, compatible with the slip-on type FIOLA filter.
The Elmar series, which began in the 1920s, matured over time and evolved into the post-war coated versions. Although many units were produced and the lens is commonly seen, if you choose one in good condition, you can experience the excellent image quality that befits Leica's standard lens.
The genuine lens hood is the FISON. Like the Elmar, it was manufactured for a long time and comes in a variety of versions. With a compactness that modern lenses lack and reliable image quality, this lens has a high repeat usage rate among Leica users.
The exterior is very clean, with no noticeable scratches or dents. There is an unidentified marking near the rangefinder coupling cam on the mount’s rear side, but since it is also plated, it appears to have been there since the time of manufacture. Perhaps it was for some kind of inspection.
The lens was fully overhauled in June 2024. The aperture movement and helicoid feel are excellently finished. The internal anti-reflection matte lacquer has been carefully reapplied, promising tight image rendering.
Although there are some minor cleaning marks on the front element, they do not affect actual image quality. The rangefinder coupling has been checked, and focusing is good.
The test shots turned out very well. Example photos have been posted in the test gallery. All shots were taken with the aperture fully open. The test staff were amazed by the sharp rendering!
This is definitely a lens you’d want to take along for city walks, mountain hikes, or travel. Comes with aftermarket front and rear caps.
