※About rarity
Released in 1956 for the Nikon S series, the Nikkor-N 50mm f1.1 is an ultra-large aperture lens with a 6-group, 9-element configuration. The filter size is 62mm, making it the largest aperture lens among Nikon's Nikkor lenses, including those for the F mount. This lens was Nippon Kogaku's response to the post-war competition for large-aperture lenses, alongside others such as the Zunow 50mm f1.1, Fujinon 50mm f1.2, Hexanon 60mm f1.2, and Canon 50mm f1.2. This particular model features an internal bayonet mount, and referred to internationally as an Internal Mount. In 1959, it transitioned to an external bayonet type. Only 835 units were produced for the Nikon S with both internal and external claws combined, and notably, 211 units were manufactured for the Leica L mount. At its widest aperture, the lens produces a soft and gentle image, but the rendering becomes more stable and distinct starting from around f1.3. There are minor scuffs on the chrome part of the filter ring and very slight paint loss on the helicoid ring, but overall, the black paint is well-preserved and the appearance is clean. The included original front cap has been inexplicably polished, causing the Fuji Mountain mark to be slightly prominent, but there is no stickiness and it is functional. The rear cap is a replica. The original 62mm UV filter is branded Nippon Kogaku Japan. A full service was conducted in August 2023, resulting in a smooth aperture operation. There are very minor cleaning marks on the front element, and the middle element's edge shows slight balsam separation, which is a common issue with this lens but does not affect image quality. The actual shooting test results were good. Additionally, the glass is clear and bright, with coatings well-preserved on all surfaces. Please note that when using a Nikon S - Leica M adapter for shooting, the rear part of the lens may interfere with the rangefinder cam, preventing accurate focusing. It is recommended to use this lens with a mirrorless camera or in live view mode. Focus and rangefinder coupling have been confirmed using our Nikon S test body. The shooting from the last sale has been posted in the test gallery, photographed using a Sony α7III through an adapter. I would be pleased if you could take a look.
