Nikkor-N 50mm f1.1, released in 1956 for the Nikon S series, is an ultra-large aperture lens. It features a 6-group, 9-element design with a 62mm filter size. Among Nikon's lenses designed for photography, including those for the F mount, this lens boasts the largest aperture.
It was Nikon's response to the post-war competition for large aperture lenses such as the Zunow 50mm f1.1, Fujinon 50mm f1.2, Hexanon 60mm f1.2, and Canon 50mm f1.2.
This model is of the external bayonet type, also known as the external mount. In 1959, Nikon transitioned from the previous internal bayonet type to this external bayonet type.
A total of only 835 units were produced, combining both internal and external bayonet types. For comparison, only 211 units were produced in the Leica L mount.
At wide open apertures, the lens delivers a very soft and gentle rendering, but it stabilizes notably around f/1.3 and beyond.
The filter ring and chrome-plated base show minor scratches from use. There are slight reflections on the black paint, but no noticeable paint loss. Overall, the appearance is in good condition.
Fully serviced in June 2024, all functions operate smoothly. Checked for focus using a Nikon S body. Distance coupling works perfectly.
There are very minor scratches at the center of the front element and a few light wiping marks on the rear element, but these should have almost no effect on actual photography. No haze is visible, and the glass is clear and sharp. The glass quality is quite good for a Nikkor 50/1.1.
When using with Nikon S - Leica M adapters, note that the lens guard at the rear interferes with the rangefinder cam, making precise focusing difficult. Enjoy using it with Nikon S series or mirrorless digital cameras.
Results from test shots were excellent. Please visit the test gallery for more details.
A plastic genuine rear cap is included.
