※About rarity

The later model of the Summarit 50mm f1.5 features aperture markings on the aperture ring side, and the removal of the external bayonet for filters and hoods, resulting in a slightly more modern look. The product code from Leitz is SOOIA. This particular unit, with a serial number in the 1.52 million range, was manufactured in 1957. In the following year, 1958, the production of the first generation Summilux 50mm f1.4 began, making this one of the last batches of the Summarit. It has a 5-group, 7-element design. It uses metric markings and the filter size is E41, the same as the steel rim models.

Although the lens construction is the same as the Xenon 50mm f1.5, the use of new glass types and coatings has significantly improved its performance. Like the first-generation Summilux 35mm, it is considered a character lens. Its rendering at maximum aperture is soft, and depending on the distance, it can produce swirling bokeh. When stopped down, the contrast increases sharply, transforming the rendering to a sharp and rich quality. It is a lens with the distinctive character typical of old lenses.

The late model Summarit, with its beautifully textured chrome finish, shows minor wear near the front of the lens barrel due to use. Overall, it retains its elegant satin-like finish. It underwent a complete overhaul in July 2024. Thanks to meticulous maintenance, the aperture and helicoid rings offer a pleasant operational feel with just the right amount of torque. Summarit lenses are often known for their stiff helicoid movement, but this particular unit operates smoothly without any stress.

The glass has minor cleaning marks on the front element and slight haze inside that couldn't be entirely removed during cleaning, but it should not affect image quality. For a Summarit, which often has scratches and haze, this lens is in top glass condition. The coating is intact on all elements.

The rangefinder coupling is perfectly calibrated, making this Summarit a pleasure to use. It comes with the original front cap.
