※About rarity
The legendary Leitz Thambar 90mm f2.2, with the product code TOODY, was introduced in 1935. This particular unit bears the manufacturing number from 1937, with a serial number in the 370,000 range. It features a 3-group 4-element configuration with a filter diameter of E48 and distance markings in meters. As Leitz's sole soft-focus lens, it gained significant attention when Leica released a modern reproduction in recent years. When shooting portraits with soft focus, it requires a dedicated filter and the use of aperture settings marked in red. For regular shooting without the soft-focus filter, use the aperture settings marked in white. Included with the Thambar lens are essential accessories: a genuine filter, hood, and hood cap. The rear cap is made of Bakelite. There are signs of paint loss and scratches due to use throughout the lens. The hood cap shows a couple of dings. Its dignified appearance would complement well-worn black-painted bodies and similar items. Fully serviced in April 2024, including focus adjustment, the aperture and helicoid operation now feel smoothly refined. The rangefinder coupling works perfectly. The front element shows some deterioration and has a few very light wiping marks, while both front and rear elements have some minor wiping scratches. However, there is no haze, and the glass is clear in the center. Test shooting results were excellent, showcasing the Thambar's characteristic dreamy rendering. Samples have been posted in the gallery, all shot wide open and with rangefinder focusing. With precise rangefinder coupling, it's a joy to shoot with.
