The focusing helicoid features distance scale in feet. While there are non-coupled versions of the Fat Elmar, this particular one is rangefinder coupled. It is non-coated. The "Germany" engraving on the barrel suggests it was intended for export. In Japan, it has been affectionately nicknamed "Daruma" and has been cherished since old times. Initially introduced in 1931 for use with non-coupled rangefinders for the Leica C, it evolved into a rangefinder-coupled version with the introduction of the Leica DII in 1932. By 1933, it had transformed into the slimmer, standard Elmar 90mm and disappeared from the market. This Fat Elmar complements the black and nickel bodies of cameras like the Leica DII and DIII exceptionally well. With a limited production run and many having seen extensive use, finding one in good condition is quite rare. Considering the 93 years since its manufacture, the appearance suggests it has been well cared for. While there are some signs of age appropriate wear, the black paint remains intact, and the nickel plating retains its dull luster. There are no prominent scratches or dents. In March 2024, fully serviced, including focusing adjustments. Meticulous maintenance has resulted in a smooth operation of the aperture and helicoid, distinguishing it from typical Elmar lenses. The matte lacquer coating inside the barrel has been carefully reapplied, promising tighter rendering. Practical shooting results were also excellent. While there is minor deterioration on the glass, there are only minimal cleaning marks and no haze. The clear glass provides crisp imaging. It comes with an original Bakelite front cap and a metal rear cap.
