Unilite 50mm f2. A fast standard lens originally made for the unusual Wrayflex SLR series, introduced in 1954 by the long-established British optical manufacturer Wray. 5 elements in 4 groups, with beautiful blue coating.

This example has been carefully converted to Leica M mount using high-quality aluminum parts and a helicoid. The rangefinder coupling works properly from 0.7m to infinity.

Wide open, the center renders fine detail while the overall image has a gentle, soft character, as if covered by a faint veil.

With its attractive glow and softness, this lens should work particularly well for portraits and still-life photography.

There is some paint loss to the black finish around the front edge of the lens, but overall the exterior remains clean, with no noticeable dents or impact marks.

The lens had already been carefully converted by the previous owner, and for this resale it has undergone a full overhaul, including careful focus adjustment.

Thanks to the thorough servicing, both the aperture and helicoid now operate very smoothly. There is no looseness in the barrel, and the rangefinder coupling works well from the minimum focusing distance to infinity. Even wide open, the depth of field seems relatively deep.

The lens elements show considerable coating deterioration on the inner elements, appearing whitish when viewed under strong LED light. There are also a fair number of light cleaning marks on the front and rear elements. These may have some effect when shooting against strong light, but the results of our actual shooting test were very good. As with the Unilite 50mm f2 lenses we have handled in the past, the glass condition of this example is less than ideal, but its rendering should still appeal strongly to vintage lens enthusiasts.
