The Retina series, a best-selling line that represents Kodak Germany, was produced over the long span from 1934 to 1969.
This camera is the Type 119, which followed the early Type 117 released in 1934 and the Type 118 of the following year, 1935. On the Type 119, the film counter was relocated closer to the winding knob and the film release lever (counter advance lever), resulting in improved usability.
The Type 119 was manufactured between 1936 and 1939. It is fitted with a 50mm f3.5 Xenar of 3 groups and 4 elements. A small number were also produced with a Tessar f3.5, which has long been regarded as a collector’s item. The shutter is a Compur Rapid, offering shutter speeds up to 1/500. Focusing is by scale focus, and the distance scale on this example is conveniently marked in meters.
During the classic camera boom of the late 1990s to early 2000s, the Retina series enjoyed great popularity as an entry-level camera. While the Retina line includes a wide variety of models ranging from scale-focus types to versions with built-in exposure meters, the first three models—117, 118, and 119—stand out for their black and nickel appearance, giving them a particularly austere and connoisseur-oriented character.
The exterior shows some paint wear, but considering the 90 years it has passed through, it remains in very good condition. There are no noticeable dents or impact marks, and it clearly appears to have been well cared for.
The lens shows some glass discoloration and slight haze on the front element, but these will have little to no effect on actual photographs.
Overhauled in December 2025. All functions operate smoothly. The viewfinder is clear and bright. Focus has been checked on a ground glass and is accurate.
As with other bellows cameras, the helicoid should be set to the infinity position when folding the camera.
The camera comes with a genuine short shutter release and a leather carry case.
