※About rarity

Elmar 5cm f3.5. Leica L-mount. Rangefinder coupled. Non-coated. Serial number 7. Meters scale.

This Elmar has a relatively early serial number of 95xxx for a model with a serial number, suggesting it was manufactured around 1930. For reference, the Leica DII with a built-in rangefinder was introduced two years later, in 1932.

It is speculated that this Elmar, originally designed for the Leica C model without rangefinder coupling, was converted to a rangefinder-coupled version at Leitz around 1933. The nickel-plated barrel of the lens was later replaced with a chrome-plated version, though the collapsible section remains nickel-plated. This suggests that the modification occurred during the early transition period from nickel to chrome plating, which is intriguing to consider.

The hybrid appearance of this lens—nickel and chrome—resembles that seen in the Contax I (Black Contax) Sonnar and Tessar lenses. Perhaps it could be whimsically dubbed the Hybrid Elmar.

While the number of hybrid Elmars is quite limited compared to those for the Black Contax, they do appear occasionally, especially with early serial numbers or Leica DII bodies. This Elmar 5cm serves as a fascinating example of the transitional phase of pre-war Leica development, from a manual to a coupled rangefinder, and from nickel to chrome plating.

The collapsible section shows some wear, but the nameplate and base are in excellent condition. The knurled edge of the nameplate shines beautifully.

In July 2024, a full overhaul was performed. The lens now offers a pleasant operating feel with just the right amount of torque, distinguishing it from other Elmars with its exceptional smoothness. The internal light baffles have been carefully repainted with a matte anti-reflective coating, enhancing the lens's sharpness. The rangefinder coupling is also functioning perfectly.

The front element shows some cleaning marks and slight deterioration. Under strong backlighting or certain lighting conditions, there might be minor effects, but the results from normal shooting conditions were very good.
