This is a late model of the Nikon S-type, a rangefinder camera made by Nippon Kogaku with the serial number 611xxxx. Production techniques have been enhanced, reflecting a period when individual quality of each unit was heightened. The walls of the film spool chamber are smoothly rounded, indicating a superior internal construction. The S-type is a model equipped with sync contacts (F: fast, 1/20 and above; S: slow, 1/8 and below) building on the predecessor M-type. The red dot below the serial number is an indicator showing the film plane. The viewfinder provides a full field of view equivalent to 50mm. Included with the camera is a Nikkor 5cm f2 lens, a fixed barrel type with Japan engraving. It features a Sonnar type design with 6 elements in 3 groups. The appropriate filter size is 40.5mm diameter. A formidable competitor to rangefinders like Leica and Contax, the Nikon S-series stands out for its manufacturing quality and excellent lens lineup, truly representing the epitome of Japanese rangefinder cameras. This Nikon S-type camera maintains a very good appearance with minimal signs of use. There are only a few very light scuffs on the bottom cover and a tiny scratch near the 'n' of the Nikon logo on the upper corner of the front apron. It is evident that this camera has been well-cared for over the years. The camera body and lens underwent an overhaul in April 2024. All components are functioning smoothly, the shutter curtain has been replaced, and the camera feels completely refreshed. The viewfinder is clear with strong contrast in the double image. The front element of the Nikkor lens has a few very shallow cleaning marks, and around the edges of the middle element, there are barely noticeable coating scratches visible only when examined with strong LED light. These imperfections do not affect the image quality at all, and the glass remains in more than satisfactory condition. It is rare to find a Nikon S that has been well-maintained, including a shutter replacement, and remains in such clean condition amidst commonly found well-used items. The camera comes with the original lens front cap and a leather case. However, the strap for the leather case is missing.
