A Leitz A36 slip-on protective filter. Originally, this was a Leitz FIRAD graduated ND filter. The glass has been replaced at some point, and it can now be used as a protective filter.
This example does not have the FIRAD engraving, but the deciding clue was the arrow mark engraved on the side of the filter rim for positioning. Later FIRAD filters can also be found with a vertical line and the engraving oben, meaning up. When the filter rim is disassembled, there is also a recessed section, presumably intended to hold the glass in a fixed orientation.
This example is the rare chrome-finished slip-on type without a retaining screw. Most of this type were finished in black paint, but it appears that a very small number were produced around the transition period to chrome. Shinichi Nakamura also mentions in Leica Accessories that only a small number were made in chrome. The production period is presumed to be around the mid-1930s.
The filter rim has a two-piece construction, allowing the glass to be held between the two sections, making replacement easy. This example has been fitted with coated glass of exactly the right size.
It fits A36 lenses such as the Elmar 35/50/90mm and Hektor 28/50mm. Please note that when used on lenses such as the Elmar, the filter must be removed and reattached each time you adjust the aperture.
The chrome rim shows only slight rubbing, and remains in quite nice condition. Since the glass is thicker than the original, the front rim does not screw in quite as deeply.
The glass is clear and bright, with no cleaning marks or haze visible.
