Elmar 50mm f3.5 Leica product code ELMAR. Manufactured in 1940 with a serial number in the 540,000 range. Non-coated. Helicoid number 7. Distance scale in meters.
This lens is the quintessential standard lens from Leica, produced for over 40 years starting in the 1920s. Few lenses exhibit as little variation in performance over time as this one. It’s a lens that truly demonstrates its quality through use.
Its remarkable compactness is unmatched by modern lenses, making it ideal for snapshots and travel.
The original matching hood is the FISON. Our store's original Elmar lens hood with aperture control feature, FB-07, is also compatible (re-release coming soon).
The helicoid ring shows some corrosion on the matte chrome plating, and there are multiple light scratches on the collapsed section due to use. The chrome plating on the nameplate and base is in good condition.
The lens was fully overhauled in September 2024. After careful maintenance, both the aperture ring and helicoid have been adjusted to provide a very smooth operation. The rangefinder coupling is perfect, and the focus is excellent. The interior anti-reflective matte lacquer has been neatly reapplied, promising more refined image quality.
The glass has a few light cleaning marks on the front element and some age-related yellowing, but neither should affect image performance. The results from real-world tests were also excellent.
This lens is a great option for those starting with Leica lenses. It comes with the original front cap.
