Early version of the Summarit 50mm f1.5 with Midland engraving.
Leitz product code is SOOIA. Serial number in the 1,240,000 range — made in 1955 in Canada, with feet scale. Filter size is E41.
While the appearance and optical construction are identical to the German-made Summarit, this version is engraved Ernst Leitz Canada Ltd. Midland on the name ring. The font size and spacing differ slightly from the German version.
A must-have lens for passionate collectors of Midland-marked Leitz items.
Incidentally, we’ve previously handled the same lens with serial numbers ending in 608 and 610. This one is 609 — right between them. If acquired together, they would have formed an incredibly rare consecutive-number trio. So close!
Pair it with a Midland-stamped Leica IIIf or a Leicavit SYOOM, and you’ll be turning heads on the street.
Perfect for those who want something just a bit different.
There is a faint scuff on the base of the lens barrel and some wear on the outer filter-mounting ring at the front of the barrel, but otherwise, including the mount area, the barrel is in very clean condition with minimal signs of use. The "Midland" engraving on the nameplate remains bright and clearly legible.
Fully overhauled in 2025. Carefully serviced, resulting in a smooth helicoid action and a pleasantly tactile aperture click. Rangefinder coupling works perfectly, and focus is accurate.
The optics show a small scratch on the edge of the front element and a few light cleaning marks on both the front and rear elements. As is common with Summarits, there is some deterioration of the lens coating, but the glass remains clear with no haze. Actual shooting tests yielded excellent results.
Comes with the original front cap.
