This is the Nikon S-type, a rangefinder camera manufactured by Nippon Kogaku with serial number 6098xxx. This unit falls into the mid-period of the S-type production line.
Like its predecessor, the M-type, this model is equipped with sync contacts (F: fast, 1/20 and above; S: slow, 1/8 and below). A distinct feature not found in the M-type is the red dot below the serial number, which serves as an indicator of the film plane.
The viewfinder does not have frame lines but offers a full view equivalent to 50mm. Interestingly, the S in Nikon S is said to stand for the initial of Sync, and some of Nikon S's advertisements from that time referred to it as "Synchronikon."
The accompanying lens is a Nikkor-S.C 5cm f1.4, featuring a Sonnar-type design with 7 elements in 3 groups and a serial number of 35xxxx. The appropriate filter size for this lens is 43mm in diameter.
As a formidable contender against other rangefinders like those from Leica and Contax, the Nikon S-series is highly regarded for its manufacturing quality and exceptional lens array, clearly standing out as a flagship in domestic rangefinder cameras.
This Nikon S-type is in quite good condition overall. There are some usage marks around the tripod socket and on the bottom cover, but the lugs and top cover remain in pristine condition.
Both the body and lens underwent an overhaul in April 2024, resulting in smooth operation across all parts. The viewfinder has some residual clouding in the prism's balsam that could not be removed, making the view slightly dark, but rest assured, it is still perfectly usable.
The included Nikkor 50mm lens shows very minor balsam separation along the edges, a common issue for this lens, but it has no impact on the quality of the photos. The glass is clear, free from haze and scratches, providing a very clean and crisp output.
The camera comes with an original rice ball mark front cap and a genuine leather case.
