A beautifully preserved early chrome Nikon S2. The Nikon S2 was introduced in December 1954 and remained in production until around the summer of 1958.
Compared to the earlier S models, the S2 features a life-size (1:1) viewfinder, a lever wind advance, a crank-type rewind, and a shutter speed dial arranged in a geometric progression. It is highly regarded for its ease of use and practicality as a working camera. The early Nikon logo is also a charming detail.
This example is an early version, with the shutter speed dial, frame counter, and flash sync selector finished in chrome. The serial number is in the 6.17 million range. It comes fitted with the classic Nikkor-S.C 5cm lens in black finish.
Total production of the Nikon S2 is said to be approximately 56,000 units, making it the most produced model in the Nikon S series. Even so, finding a truly clean example like this has become increasingly difficult.

There are extremely faint rub marks on the plating around the accessory shoe on the top cover and around the tripod socket on the bottom plate, but aside from that, the strap lugs, leather covering, and other areas show very little signs of use. Overall, this is a very clean and attractive example.
Overhauled in December 2025. The S2 is known for its excellent reliability to begin with, and thanks to careful servicing, all functions are operating properly with a very smooth and refined feel. The viewfinder is clear and bright, with strong contrast in the rangefinder patch.
As for the lens, there is a very slight, typical balsam separation along the edge of the middle element, but it has virtually no effect on actual photographs. Otherwise, the glass is clean and clear, with no cleaning marks or haze.
Checked on a focusing screen, and both the rangefinder coupling and focus accuracy are good.
Caps and a leather case are included. A beautiful example, well suited for both collection and use.
