※About rarity

The Nikon Model I is a significant camera that marks the beginning of Japanese optical camera history, being the progenitor of the Nikon S and ultimately the Nikon F. Only 738 units of the Nikon Model I were produced, excluding test models. The first unit is said to be serial number 60922, and the last unit is 609759. This particular unit has the serial number 609549.

The Nikon Model I was the first mass-produced camera sold for civilian use by Nippon Kogaku after World War II, and it was the first camera to be named "Nikon." It employed the unique Nikon format with a vertical-horizontal ratio of 24×32mm. Due to requests from photo labs, this format was changed to 24x34mm in the Nikon M and S models, and eventually to the 24x36mm Leica format from the Nikon S2 onwards.

The camera features a cloth focal-plane shutter and a viewfinder magnification of 0.6x, with distance markings in feet. This unit displays characteristics typical of mid to late Nikon Model I cameras, including four film guide rails (early models had two), a fixed spool, a triple decorative ring around the eyepiece, and a bottom plate covering the shutter mechanism. The apron is secured with six screws, and the bottom cover is engraved with "MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN." The serial numbers on the body and back cover match.

The lens is an early Nikkor-H.C 5cm f2 collapsible model with a serial number of 811257. The first three digits of the serial number indicate that it belongs to the 811 series, and the aperture ring features knurling in four places. The lens has a 3-group, 6-element design. This unit matches the characteristics and lens serial number range of other Nikon Model I cameras we have previously handled. This rare piece is fully original and a true collectible.

There are a few thin, long scratches and some minor scuffs on the bottom cover. Additionally, the tripod socket is slightly dented. The apron also has some minor scuff marks, but for a Nikon Model I, this unit is in quite good condition. The interior of the body retains its black paint well, complementing the clean exterior and indicating a well-preserved state. Both the body and lens were overhauled in 2024, and all components function smoothly.

Unfortunately, there is a significant balsam separation approximately 1cm in diameter in the center of the rear lens element. Other than some light cleaning marks, there is no fungus present. Although it is from a slightly later period, an original black aluminum lens cap is included.
