Leica 250GG Reporter. Designed for sports and press photography, this model takes a 10-meter film load and allows continuous shooting of 250 frames. The Leitz product code for the body only is LOOMY.
This example features a combination of black paint and chrome finish. The serial number is 1501xx. Production of the IIIa-based Model GG began in July 1936 from serial 150125, placing this unit in 1936. The included Summar lens is a coated version from 1939.
Large dedicated magazines are used on both the supply and take-up sides, and because the camera does not rewind film, there is no R-lever. Film loading must be done in a darkroom.
A total of two units based on the Leica DII were made in 1933, followed by 244 units based on the DIII from 1934 to 1937, and 709 units based on the IIIa from 1937 to 1953. Later, an extremely rare variant equipped with a Leica Motor was produced in 29 units, and these command exceptionally high prices worldwide.
The 250 Reporters based on the Leica DII and DIII are known as Model FF, while those based on the IIIa are known as Model GG.
Most examples feature black paint with nickel or chrome trim, though an all-chrome version also exists.
Based on the Barnack Leica, the camera’s distinctive form makes it a particularly appealing piece for collectors.
There is considerable overall wear. The vulcanite shows brown discoloration in several areas, and light dings can be found on various edges, along with patches of paint loss and brassing. Despite this, the camera has a rather bold and purposeful look. The bottom plate closes with a bit of a quirk and requires a small technique.
The body and lens were overhauled in 2025. All functions operate properly, and the finder view is clear. In this Reiwa era where film has become expensive, one is unlikely to shoot all 250 consecutive frames, but this 250GG Reporter has been fully serviced and can be enjoyed with confidence.
The included Summar shows a fair amount of cleaning marks, which may have some effect under backlit conditions.
Two indispensable magazines are included, along with the original front cap.
