The Leica M3 Early model. The serial number is 7001xx, manufactured in 1954, the first year of M3 release. Although this unit lacks the corner design (corner and no-corner variants coexist based on M3’s single-digit serial numbers), it retains the original features typical of the early version.
Notable features include no mount screw at the 12 o’clock position, ASA 200 film backdoor with a slightly pinkish indicator, distinctive backdoor interior, chassis design shared with corner and prototype models, chrome half-moon stopper on the accessory shoe (stainless steel also present), single-dot rewind axle (some may have a minus sign), and the shape of the tripod socket.
The Leica M3 Early, along with the Leica A Early model, becomes more fascinating the deeper you explore its intricacies.
Despite signs of use over the years, such as minor scratches and wear, this camera remains in original condition, including the genuine vulcanite covering. The slanted section next to the rangefinder window hints at its stepped body heritage (early models had both slanted and non-slanted versions).
In March 2024, it was serviced, including shutter curtain replacement. All functions operate smoothly, with a responsive shutter and a clear viewfinder. M3 cameras with three-digit serial numbers are increasingly rare.
