Sonnar 85mm f2 (Contax)
Sonnar 85mm f2. Post-war production by Carl Zeiss Jena, manufactured in 1948. This version features an aluminum lens barrel and is marked in meters. It has a 3-group, 6-element construction and is T-coated. The weight is 388g.
This model has an aluminum barrel, making it somewhat lighter. It is a large aperture, fast medium telephoto lens densely packed with glass.
It is highly renowned as a portrait lens, celebrated for its rich tonal range and the elegant way it renders focus. It comes with an original Zeiss Stuttgart screw-in hood. The filter diameter is 49mm.
There are some minor scratches and signs of use, but the aluminum lens barrel shows little rust, maintaining a quite good appearance.
The lens underwent a full service in April 2024. Typically, the aperture and helicoid of the Sonnar 85mm can feel stiff, but they now operate smoothly.
There are two faint cleaning marks on the front element, and some roughness on the coatings of both the front and rear elements, but these should not affect the image quality. Overall, the glass remains clear. The included hood shows considerable wear, with noticeable abrasions.
This lens is ideal for practical use. The test shooting results were also good. I would be pleased if you could view them in our test shooting gallery.
