The Nikon-P Auto 10.5cm f2.5, earliest model with tick mark and R-index. This initial type was introduced in 1959 and produced until mid-1960.
It features a Sonnar-type design with 3 groups and 5 elements. Distance markings are in meters.
Designed based on the excellent performance of the Nikon S-mount Nikkor P·C 10.5cm f2.5, credited to Yoshihiko Wakimoto, who also worked on the original S-mount lens. The original Nikon S-mount 105mm lens couldn't maintain sufficient back focus for the Nikon F, so a minor adjustment reduced the rear element thickness by 1mm, solving the issue and allowing compatibility with the Nikon F—a fascinating anecdote detailed in "Nikkor: One Thousand and One Nights Story".
Weighing 375g, this lens is renowned for its sharpness, particularly in the center even wide open, making it ideal for portraits. It produces pleasing bokeh without any noticeable quirks.
Serial number 121034 of this lens is featured in Classic Camera Special No. 52 "Nikon F 40 Years" on page 43. According to Uli Koch's book "Nikon F: The Lenses", this Type 1 earliest model with check mark spans serial numbers from 120101 to 121034, making this lens the very last one produced in that range.
The helicoid ring shows minor paint loss and wear, but overall, the appearance is clean. The early type's characteristic beautiful finish, carefully wiped clear on the aluminum parts, remains intact.
All functions operate smoothly. The front element exhibits some wiping marks but no haze or other issues.
Included are a hood, front and rear caps, and a leather case (with original box). Additionally, a genuine Nikon UV filter (L38) from Nippon Kogaku is included.
Pair it with your Nikon F 640 for a great addition to your collection!
