W-Nikkor 3.5cm f2.5. Made by Nippon Kogaku. Introduced in 1952 for the Nikon S mount, with serial number 2707xx. It features a lens configuration of 4 groups and 6 elements in a double Gauss design. Near the maximum aperture, it exhibits characteristic vignetting typical of Gauss-type lenses, providing a vintage lens-like rendering. The filter diameter is 43mm, and the distance markings are in feet.
Among Nikon S-mount 35mm f2.5 lenses, there are broadly three types, and this particular one belongs to the final type known as the "mirror barrel" introduced around 1959. It shares the same external design as the renowned Nikkor 35mm f1.8 lens of the same era.
With extensive use of aluminum, it weighs only 104g, which is notably lighter compared to the early all-chrome barrel 35mm f2.5 lens, being 35% lighter.
Ideal for Nikon S-series cameras, and it can also be enjoyed on mirrorless digital cameras via an adapter. A dedicated hood for the f2.5, resembling the hood for the 35mm f1.8, is somewhat rare but available.
The lens has minimal signs of use and appears to be in excellent condition overall.
All functions work smoothly, and the helicoid operation feels just right, with a moderate amount of torque.
There is only one very shallow cleaning mark on the rear element, which is unlikely to affect image quality. Otherwise, there are no haze or other issues, and the glass is clean and clear.
We have tested the lens for rangefinder coupling and focus accuracy using our Nikon S-body dedicated for focus checking.
It comes with the original front cap and a plastic case.
