Leica M3. Late-model single-stroke version. With a serial number in the 1,000,000 range, this particular camera was shipped in September 1960. The Leitz product code is IGEMO.
Introduced in 1954, the Leica M3 was the camera that established the golden age of Leitz, featuring the Leica M mount that ensured quick lens changes and secure attachment, a superb viewfinder with a built-in rangefinder and automatic parallax correction, a design perfected in terms of functional beauty, a robust body ensuring stable operation, and an exceptionally high-quality construction that competitors could not match.
The late-model M3 addressed minor weaknesses found in the early models and introduced the more conventional single-stroke film advance mechanism. Even today, the M3 is considered the best model for use with 50mm lenses, undoubtedly because of its unparalleled viewfinder.
Beginning with the Leica M3, the lineage of Leica M cameras continued through the MP, M2, M4, M5, M4-2, M4-P, M6, M7, M8, M9, M10, and M11. The distinctive appearance that immediately identifies a camera as a Leica M traces back to the Leica M3, which embodies all the essential elements of the series.
Incidentally, the last three digits of this camera's serial number are 900, a nice round number. Easy to remember!
There is a dent on the corner of the top plate near the viewfinder. There are also very slight dents between the accessory shoe and the M3 engraving, and below the film counter at the upper left when viewed from the front of the camera. Small scratches can be seen above the strap lugs on both sides. Other light scuff marks are visible throughout, with more noticeable scuffing on the bottom plate. However, the camera still has a clean appearance when viewed from a distance. The gutta-percha covering is entirely original.
Overhauled in 2026. All controls operate smoothly. The viewfinder is clear, and the rangefinder patch has good contrast.
This late-model M3 is in just the right condition for use without worrying too much about cosmetic wear. A great choice for practical use!
