A rare ALPA 11es with a Macro-Switar 50mm f1.8. This special model was produced in extremely small numbers between 1973 and 1979 and is said to have been supplied for crystallography use. Total production was only 22 units, making it an extraordinarily rare model that is almost never seen.
This particular camera was manufactured in 1975 and is one of nine units with serial numbers from 58820 to 58829. It was acquired in 2022 during a buying trip in Europe from an ALPA collector in northern Italy.
The basic specifications are derived from the 11el, but the rear-facing CdS cell, shutter release lock, self-timer, and mirror-up function have been omitted. Compared to standard ALPA bodies, it has a cleaner, more streamlined appearance.
The exposure meter operates in a very unusual way: when correct exposure is reached, the indicator disappears entirely. When the orange arrow pointing to the left lights up, the exposure is over; when the red arrow pointing to the right lights up, the exposure is under. And when both are off—yes, that means correct exposure.
One can’t help but wonder what happens when the battery dies, but perhaps that concern simply reflects the limitations of a camera shop staff member who doesn’t fully understand the original working environment for which this model was intended 😅
Very faint signs of wear can be seen, but overall it shows minimal use and has a clean, attractive appearance. The Macro-Switar shows virtually no signs of use and features a beautifully preserved lens barrel. The serial numbers on the body and back match.
Both the body and the lens were fully overhauled in December 2025. Operation is smooth throughout, and the exposure meter indicates correct values.
The front element of the Macro-Switar shows a somewhat higher number of light cleaning marks, but there is no haze and the glass is clear and transparent. Thanks to careful servicing, the helicoid and aperture offer exceptionally smooth and precise operation.
The original front lens cap and the rare strap attachment fittings are included.
