Lumax 45mm f1.9 Leica screw mount. Although it has the same mount diameter and flange back, please note that it does not couple with the rangefinder.
This lens is for the Periflex, a unique Leica-type camera from Britain that employs a periscope-style viewfinder. This early model of the Periflex, with its fascinating mechanism, is irresistible for mechanical enthusiasts. However, it is also considered one of the most difficult cameras to use when it comes to viewfinder visibility and focusing distance.
The Lumax 45mm f1.9 is a standard lens for the Periflex models from the Periflex 3 introduced in 1957 onwards. It has a 4-group, 6-element Gauss-type optical construction with a 12-blade aperture. The Lumax lacks a filter thread, so a slip-on filter of around 48mm is suitable for attachment.
Despite the somewhat flimsy-looking aluminum barrel, this lens delivers surprisingly refined and charming images with good color reproduction. Although it was not very popular in the past due to its non-coupling with the rangefinder despite being a Leica screw mount, the advent of digital Leica M models equipped with live view has expanded its opportunities for use, thanks to its excellent focal length and brightness.
It is also a great choice for those new to vintage lenses.
There are several signs of repair on the edge of the filter frame. The aluminum barrel also shows signs of use consistent with its age. It underwent a full service in April 2024. The often-sticking aperture and helicoid ring of the Lumax now operate smoothly and stress-free. Thanks to meticulous maintenance, the internal mount has been repainted with anti-reflective matte lacquer, promising tighter image rendering.
Contrary to its somewhat used exterior, the glass is clear with no noticeable cleaning marks or haze. There are minor coating scratches, but they have no impact on actual image quality.
The test results were also excellent. Please check the test shots for reference. All photos were taken with the Sony α7III, fully open aperture.
